Supporting IRMO with Volunteer Workshops - we aren't just crazy walkers!
On top of fundraising, we have had a really fantastic time working directly with IRMO over the past few months. A quick reminder for those who tragically missed the last blog post - IRMO is the "Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation", a London-based charity looking to support Indoamericans to escape from poverty and exploitation.
We spent some time at the beginning of our collaboration in September discussing how best we could support the work they do. IRMO runs a number of different projects from a Women’s Project that supports women with anything from learning English, to providing emotional and social support to a Careers service that aims to help individuals with developing their employability skills, writing a CV and interview practice.
Through our conversations with the charity we decided to collaborate with the Family Project and LIFE, two projects that focus on education and supporting children and young adults ages 5-19 with their learning and development. The Family Project runs sessions 4 times a week to support children with their homework, reading and learning in general. The volunteering team have been attending these sessions regularly and supporting the volunteers by taking the children out of the classroom setting for 1:1 reading support. The children have really engaged with the sessions and have enjoyed the opportunity to have time where they can focus on their individual learning and language skills outside of the classroom.
We have really enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in the day to day work of the charity but we also wanted to be able to help with their long term aims and support them with their future projects. We agreed to deliver 4 workshops that targeted areas that the charity wanted support with:
Catherine led a workshop on behaviour management, using her experience of being a teacher to provide invaluable tips and advice to the volunteers on how to manage behaviour in the classroom.
Chloe took the session on Special Needs Support, which involved having a Q&A with an Educational Psychologist who also spoke about SEN in schools and the role of the local council.
Charlotte is running a session with parents about how they can support their children with reading, helping parents to build their confidence and feel able to support their children’s learning despite the language barrier.
Lastly, Magda and Matt will be working with LIFE and helping to support young people write personal statements and CVs to help them prepare for the next steps after school.
We have really enjoyed working with the charity, and hope that the work we have done so far will help to support them as they continue their great work!
